4. My review of Gotye ‘Making Mirrors’

You know when there is SO much hype about a song or an album or a movie or whatever, that you instantly think it’s going to be shit, maybe that’s just me but anyway, when Gotye released Making Mirrors I publicly said ‘Oh this will be some album that only musicians will like, something like a Mars Volta album’.

Anyway, I loaded it up in to my phone so I could listen to it while I commute and bugger me, it’s actually a great album. I wanted to hate it, I really did. Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely elements of Making Mirrors which I don’t think are great, like the one minute opening track ‘Making Mirrors’ but then it works its way in to ‘Easy Way Out’ and then BAM, you’re hit with (what feels like) the biggest song in the world.

Once again, this could just be me but when I am walking along listening to ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ I find myself wanting to make my own video to it, I have even done a scrunch my hair up sexy pose when Wally busts in to one of his wails. God dammit I am totally suckered in.

Once my hair is messed up and I am looking all sexy, you go in to ‘Eyes Wide Open’ with lyrics like “Some people offered up answers / We made out like we heard / but they were only words / They didn’t add up to a change in the way we were living”. Now don’t get me wrong, I have never been in a situation like this yet it feels so relatable. What is this man doing to me?

Then all of a sudden this album turns into Paul Simon’s Graceland and is so poppy. I would say that the track ‘I Feel Better’ reminds me of ‘learnalilgivinanlovin’ from Like Drawing Blood back in 2006 but then you keep going and get in to ‘State of the Art’ a song using and about his Model D 575 Magic Swing Piano. I don’t get the song but I don’t have to, I like it.

There’s more songs on the album and I’ve barely scratched the surface when it comes to Making Mirrors and I am sure I’ve got things wrong and yadda yadda yadda but let me lay it out for you.

    It’s good.

    Real good.

Do yourself a favour, go buy it and stop being a cool kid like I was trying to be.

  9. My friend Joel took this photo of me smoking. I already have a sweet profile pic on faceys so I thought I’d put it here. Maybe it’ll be my Google+ profile if I ever get one.
